It's highly advisable that you commence from the very beginning once you've decided to learn how to make clever cakes. What you may not know is that cake decorators are hired regularly the world over. Cake decorating is a great skill to have, and once you know the basics, you can let your imagination run wild. First and foremost, you must learn the very basics of cake decorating, otherwise you risk getting a bit frustrated. Remember the fanciest cake isn't clever if it doesn't taste good or is a flop. What this means is that you begin with the cake itself. Whether you hand make your cake, make it from a mix, or purchase a premade cake to start with, your cake needs to be tasty and moist. As a result, you must be completely sure that a cake is indeed delicious before going ahead and decorating it. Once your cake has been baked, you must wait until it has reached a cool temperature before applying any icing on top. It's common practice to make the cake an entire day before adding the icing on top. You should add icing to a cool cake because it will cause it to stick to the cake. On the other hand, a warm cake makes the icing drip. A clever tip to follow is to turn your cake board upside down, because this way you can ensure that the icing will stick to your cake and that the cake indeed tastes good. Layer it with a thin layer of the icing as this will keep it from crumbling. At the moment, you have the flat bottom being the top, which means you can start the normal icing procedure. In order to ensure that the icing is smooth and flat all around, use your metal icing tool after dipping it in water. However, what's not very clever is running out of icing for your cake. It's wise and useful to have sufficient icing with you before even starting to bake the cake. It's advisable that you begin with only simple white icing, and only start adding different colors as you decorate. The saying that practice makes perfect could not be truer, and even more so when it concerns cakes. You may have to prepare a cake for an important occasion some day, so it's highly recommended that you practice on wax paper first. Believe it or not, but your icing consistency will determine how your decorations will turn out. There is also a way to find out if your icing is too thin or too thick. If your decorations constantly fall apart, then you can be rest assured that your icing is too thin. On the other hand, if you find it too hard to get the icing to reach the tip of the icing tube, then you can be rest assured that your icing is too thick. You're going to make mistakes, you're going to get frustrated, but practice and the ability to start simply is what the basics of clever cake decorating is all about. All skills take time to grow, so it's important that you enjoy the learning process and have some fun during the process.
